Today is Orphan Sunday. It’s a day to remember that there are millions of children around the world who are in desperate need of help. I want to share with you some statistics:
-Over 130 million children have lost one or both parents
-Every 18 seconds another child becomes an orphan, without a mother or father
– Every 14 seconds a child loses a parent due to AIDS
– 43.4 million orphans live in sub-Saharan Africa, 87.6 million orphans live in
Asia, and 12.4 million orphans live in Latin America and the
-1.5 million children live in public care in Central and Eastern Europe alone
-At any given point there are over 500,000 children in the U.S. Foster Care
The need is so great, what can YOU do?
If only 7% of the 2 billion Christians in the world would show hope to a single
orphan, looking after the child in their distress, there would effectively be no
more orphans. We can each do something!
You may not be able to adopt, I don’t believe everyone should. You may not be able to give money to those who are adopting. You may not be able to go to these countries on missions trips and spread the love of Jesus to these children, but you can do something. You can pray. There is no excuse for not knowing about this issue and there is no excuse for not praying. This is a real issue! This is a huge problem. There are times when it feels overwhelming and you might just want to ignore it and go about your life. You can’t do that. These children need christians to help them. If we don’t, who will? God calls us to help the orphans. It’s not optional. You are called to do something.
Everyone can pray!
Some people can give money to those who are adopting or those who are going to these countries and helping these children. Even if it’s just a few dollars, every little bit helps. We waste so much money in this country, if you decide to not go out to eat once this month and give that money to orphans, it will help. If everyone did that, there would be no more money needed.
Some people can adopt. You may think it’s too big of a job for you. It may seem crazy and it may seem like it costs too much, but if God has given you even an inkling that you might want to adopt, don’t let those things stop you. God will provide, I can testify to that myself. And God will give you the resources and energy you need to adopt. You can do it. And if you have a spouse who is not supportive of this idea, pray that God would change their heart. He can and He will, if it is his will for you to adopt.
There are so many children in need. We cannot forget them. They need us! Please do something for them this Sunday and remember the orphans.
